Part of the Lexipol webinar series Police Reform: Policy & Training Impacts

View On Demand (Recorded March 30, 2021)

The harsh reality of mental health services in the United States is that police are often the de facto first responders to people in crisis. Many law enforcement agencies have taken the laudable steps of staffing specialized response teams and training officers in crisis intervention. But tragic encounters between officers and people with mental health issues continue to occur.

This webinar will explore how crisis mitigation requires officers to draw on a different mindset and a different skillset than many other types of response. Attendees will learn tactics to de-escalate such situations and gain insight into the proper perspective to assist them when dealing with a person in crisis.

You’ll learn:

  • 4 principles of de-escalation and how they apply to encounters with people in crisis
  • Why officers must try to understand the other person’s perspective when interacting with someone in crisis
  • Tactics that minimize harm and enhance officer safety
  • The importance of building partnerships with available mobile mental health providers and regional mental health organizations
