The need for greater diversity in the fire service has been a topic of discussion for a long time. But often missing in this conversation is the concept of racial justice and equity. As a result, diversity often gets pigeonholed as a recruitment problem, when in fact the issue is much broader, reflecting the reality of race in the United States as a whole.
The fire service can’t solve the problem of racial inequity, but neither can it afford to ignore it. Doing so erodes community trust and endangers the safety of all firefighters. And while we can’t solve the problem overnight, we can act now to make a positive difference.
This video series features candid discussion about racial inequity in the fire service. The bulk of the sessions are driven by audience questions. Presenters share simple, effective steps attendees can take to start on a path toward racial justice and equity—a path to a better fire service.
